Medicare Enrollment Periods
Upon enrolling in Medicare during your Initial Enrollment Period, you can choose between Original Medicare (Parts A and B) or a Medicare Advantage plan (Part C) that merges both types of coverage. Additionally, Part D (prescription drug) coverage is an option with either of these choices.
Once you have chosen your plans, you are not locked into them indefinitely. Medicare provides opportunities for you to modify your plan(s) based on your circumstances.
Medicare’s Annual Enrollment Period (Also known as AEP)
After enrolling in Medicare, you are entitled to review your plan choices and make adjustments annually. During the Open Enrollment Period from October 15 to December 7, you can modify Part C (Advantage) or Part D (prescription) plans to suit your needs.
- Join, drop, or switch to another Medicare Advantage Plan (or add or drop drug coverage).
- Switch from Original Medicare to a Medicare Advantage Plan or from a Medicare Advantage Plan to Original Medicare.
- Join, drop, or switch to another Medicare drug plan if you’re in Original Medicare.

Medicare Open Enrollment is from January 1 – March 31
During this time you can:
- Switch to another Medicare Advantage Plan with or without drug coverage.
- Drop your Medicare Advantage Plan and return to Original Medicare. You'll also be able to join a separate Medicare drug plan.
What should you do if you need to modify your plan outside of these periods?
In specific circumstances, like moving or losing coverage, you may be eligible for a two-month Special Enrollment Period. This allows you to adjust your Medicare plan(s) during this period.
For example, shifting from one geographic location to another could make you eligible for a Special Enrollment Period, especially if your current network is not accessible at your new residence.
Throughout your Special Enrollment Period (SEP), you have the option to transition to a new Medicare Advantage plan or Part D plan, or revert to Original Medicare without facing any penalties. Additionally, under certain circumstances, you may have the opportunity to enroll in a Medigap plan without the need for medical underwriting, known as guaranteed issue rights.
If you think you may be eligible for a Special Enrollment Period, reach out to your plan administrator promptly following the qualifying event. We are here to help you through this process.
